Liverpool Province

The lodges within the Liverpool Province are deeply rooted in the heartland of Liverpool, a city renowned for its historic contributions to culture, commerce, and industry. Situated across key towns and villages, these lodges reflect the enduring spirit of a region celebrated as a global powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution. Liverpool’s bustling docks once served as the gateway to the world, driving trade, innovation, and prosperity. The city’s industrial legacy is complemented by its cultural significance as the birthplace of The Beatles, whose music captivated audiences worldwide and cemented Liverpool’s status as a hub of creativity.

The Liverpool Provincial Grand Lodge (Circuit 1) is proud of its long and storied history, standing as one of the most active branches of the Grand Lodge of England. Within the Province, approximately 85 lodges are in operation, welcoming members into the Orange family of Male, Female, and Junior Lodges. The Province is also enriched by several dedicated bands whose vibrant music leads processions during key parades and events.

Orange Lodges have been part of Liverpool’s social fabric since the early 1800s, with the first “Twelfth” parade taking place in 1819. The 200th anniversary of this iconic event was celebrated in 2019, underscoring the enduring importance of these traditions to the city. Over the past two centuries, Liverpool and its society have undergone significant transformation, prompting the Institution to adapt to changing demographics and societal shifts. Despite these changes, the lodges have maintained their core values and traditions, offering a steadfast sense of community and continuity in an evolving landscape.

Throughout the year, the Provincial Grand Lodge organises a series of parades and events to celebrate historical and religious milestones. Highlights include the St. George’s Parade to Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, the Annual July Thanksgiving Service, the Reformation Service, and the Remembrance Service, honouring those who sacrificed their lives in conflict. The Junior Lodges also play a significant role in parades such as the Hoylake procession, commemorating King William III’s departure for his campaign in Ireland.

The Twelfth of July is a particularly significant date for the Liverpool Province, marking King William III’s victory at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The occasion is celebrated with a vibrant parade through the streets of Liverpool and Southport, drawing large crowds and offering a spectacular display of music, colour, and pageantry. The Province also demonstrates its steadfast support for the Monarchy through special parades commemorating royal events, including the Jubilee of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III.

Today, the lodges are proud custodians of this rich heritage, uniting members through a shared commitment to tradition and community values. Beyond parades and services, the Province actively engages with the public through exhibitions at institutions such as The Museum of Liverpool and Liverpool Central Library. These initiatives highlight the lodges’ integral role in the city’s history and their ongoing contributions to Liverpool’s cultural landscape. With locations spanning from historic Chester to the South Liverpool area of Garston and beyond, the lodges continue to thrive, embodying the resilience and camaraderie that define Liverpool’s story.
